Disclosure: Taylor Family Software builds custom websites, so we have a horse in this race. We’ve tried to keep the comparison fair, website builders are genuinely the right choice for some people, and we say so below.
Quick answer: Website builders like Wix and Squarespace are cheaper and simpler to start, and they’re perfectly fine for a basic site. A custom site wins on SEO, speed, design control, and true ownership. For most small businesses that want to be found on Google and turn visitors into customers, custom pays off over time, and ours start at $300.
I’m Chris Taylor, and I build custom websites for a living. I’m also not going to pretend builders are useless, they’re not. The honest answer to “which is right for you?” depends on what you’re trying to do. Let’s walk through it.
What’s the actual difference?
A website builder is a subscription tool. You pick a template, drag and drop your content, and pay a monthly fee to keep the site live. It’s quick and there’s no developer involved. The trade-off: you’re renting the site, and you live inside the platform’s limits.
A custom build is the opposite model. A developer builds your site from scratch, your design, your code, your decisions. You pay once to build it, and you own what you get. No template ceiling, no monthly platform rent, no lock-in.
Put simply: a builder is rent, a custom site is own. A builder is templates, custom is anything a developer can do. A builder is a forever monthly fee, custom is one build you keep.
Side-by-side comparison
| Factor | Website builder | Custom build |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Low (often free to start) | Higher one-time (ours from $300) |
| Ongoing cost | Monthly subscription, forever | Just hosting + domain |
| SEO ceiling | Capped by the platform | As high as the work you put in |
| Design freedom | Limited to templates and built-in blocks | Anything you can design |
| Ownership | You rent; platform owns the system | You own the source code |
| Speed / performance | Often heavy, platform-bloated | Built lean, fast by default |
| Who maintains it | You, inside the builder | You or your developer, your call |
When a website builder is the right call
I’ll say it plainly: sometimes a builder is the smart choice. Don’t pay for custom work you don’t need.
A builder makes sense when your site is very simple, a one-page brochure, a coming-soon page, or a basic info site that won’t change much. The template will do the job.
It’s also the right call for a hobby or side project where the site doesn’t need to make money or rank on Google. If it’s for fun, keep it cheap and easy.
If you’re a confident DIY self-manager who wants to log in and tweak things yourself without ever touching code, builders are built for you. That’s their whole pitch, and it’s a real strength.
And if you’re on the tightest possible budget right now and just need something online today, a free or near-free builder beats no website at all. Start there. You can always go custom later.
When you should go custom
Custom earns its keep the moment your website has a job to do.
Go custom when being found on Google matters. SEO on a builder is fine for the basics, but the ceiling is real, page speed, clean code, and full control over structure and metadata are where custom pulls ahead. If organic traffic is part of your plan, you want room to grow.
Go custom when conversions matter, when the site needs to turn visitors into calls, bookings, or sales. A page built around your customer’s path will out-convert a generic template.
Go custom when you have a specific brand or design in mind. If “close enough” from a template list isn’t good enough, you need a real build.
Go custom when you need integrations, a booking system, a payment flow, a custom form, a connection to some other tool. Builders allow some of this; custom allows all of it.
And go custom when owning your site matters to you. No platform deciding your future, no monthly rent, no being held hostage by a subscription you can’t cancel without losing everything.
What a custom site costs (and what you get)
Here’s our model, no mystery pricing. We build custom websites from $300. SEO and mobile-responsive design are included, not upsells. You get a fixed quote up front, so you know the number before we start, and a typical turnaround of about one to two weeks.
When it’s done, you own the source code. It’s yours. No lock-in, no platform rent, no surprise.
We’re based in Kingman, in Mohave County, Arizona, we offer custom website design in Kingman, AZ for neighbors who’d rather work with someone local, and we work with clients nationwide. We’re a Christian-owned indie studio, and 15% of our revenue goes to our church and to Tools for Teens, that’s part of why we do this.

FAQ
Is Wix or Squarespace bad for SEO?
No, they’re not bad, they’re just capped. You can rank a builder site for low-competition terms. But page speed, code bloat, and limited control over structure put a ceiling on how far you can push. For competitive SEO, custom gives you more room.
Can I move off a website builder later?
Yes, but it’s a rebuild, not a transfer. Builders don’t hand you portable code, so moving usually means building fresh on your own platform. Your content and domain come with you; the site itself gets rebuilt. Worth planning for early.
Is a custom site worth it for a small business?
Often, yes, especially if Google traffic, conversions, or a specific brand matter. If your site is purely a digital business card that won’t change, a builder may be plenty. The deciding question: does your website have a real job to do?
Do I actually own a custom site?
Yes. With our custom builds, you own the source code outright. There’s no platform renting it back to you and no lock-in. You host it where you like and take it anywhere. That ownership is one of the biggest differences from a builder.
How much does a custom website cost?
Ours start at $300 with SEO and mobile design included, a fixed quote up front, and roughly a one-to-two-week turnaround. Cost above that depends on size and features. You’ll always know the number before we begin, no hourly surprises, no creeping invoices.
